ABOUT...

Once upon a time there was a silly little girl who lived her life in an imaginarium of pretend and make believe. Just a little girl with ants in her pants...not able to sit still...doing this...dabbling in that...dreaming of the other. She grew up by choosing the road less traveled (all the while painting on the walls).

Her grown-up years were spent conforming to the way it was supposed to be...but deep inside the silly girl was dying to break free. At last, she found the strength to let her creative voice escape...to let it fly..

This artful rediscovery culminated in the Sally Jean Collection ~ a treasury of Art Collage Charms showcasing her creative "ants in the pants" style and her love for the discarded, unwanted treasures from long ago.

Each master collage is created by hand, using antique photographs from Sally Jean's private collection along with vintage ephemera (most from the 1800's). When asked, Sally Jean replies "it's not destroying the artifact, it's preserving it!". Yes, let's just say that. The photos and papers are torn, layered, painted, smudged, and chalked. Most of the time, she'll work on several collages at once (the ants in the pants thing), sometimes tossing out the paintbrush and working directly with her fingers (the peeling paint fingertips are always a hit at the grocery store).

She'll then dip into her jars of Found Objects...discarded artifacts unwanted by others but precious to her. Rhinestone pins with a stone or two missing, trims from frayed garments last worn long ago, metal clippings from rusty tin boxes, buttons with their threads still intact. It is these things she loves to play with...to give a home to.

Perhaps the most desired bit of her collage creations is the addition of text. She has a way of putting words with images and often finds the "caption" for a photo just popping into her head. The quotes and sayings in her artwork are sometimes silly, sometimes sentimental, and sometimes don't make sense. This is because many of the sayings are taken directly from the pages of antique books...verbatim...yet completely out of context. Hours upon hours are spent reading through time-worn books, searching for a sentence that may just jump out of no-where. Every once in a while she comes across a book whose story is so intriguing she wanted to read more and would flip back to the beginning of the book, only to discover missing words, sentences, paragraphs, and even whole pages that she had clipped out herself.

Finishing touches including her signature "doodles" grace each of her collages...just Sally Jean's way of wrapping each mini artwork up with a bow. Oh, yes, she has her favorite little works of art. And there are also those that remain unfinished, tucked away in a box somewhere and occasionally come out to play and morph into new artwork.

No matter what, all of these little works of art are meant to be shared...so each is converted to a high-resolution image printed with archival inks (a life span of 100 years under glass) on professional artists' paper and sandwiched between glass. Each is then framed with very high silver content lead-free solder which Sally Jean solders herself. All this is done with the hopes that when seen, worn, and read by others, bursts of "THIS IS SO ME!" or "I FEEL THIS WAY TOO!" are shouted. (Of course, there must be someone else who drinks Diet Coke for breakfast or loves her pussycat a bit too much).

Making little collages into jewelry is like wearing your heart on your sleeve...only better...it's wearing your sentiments around your neck. Eye candy for the soul...

Today, Sally Jean creates her Vintage Art Collage Charms in her Portland, Oregon studio in the heart of the art-friendly Pearl District. Preferring to work from home, the downtown studio allows her a place to keep the beloved "clutter" she uses in her artwork. It is filled with the things she loves...jars of broken jewelry, drawers of knotted ribbons, stacked antique ledgers, Lucy (the lighted goose) adorned with her candy necklace who keeps a watchful eye on all the goings-on and Stinky, Sally Jean's handmade chubby cat, who keeps Lucy company.
